Badminton Shuttlecocks
Badminton shuttlecocks (often commonly known as a shuttle ) is a high-drag projectile with an open conical shape. The cone is formed from fourteen to sixteen overlapping 70mm feathers embedded into a rounded cork base. A shuttlecock weighs around 4.75 - 5.50 grams with the diameter of the cork is 25-28mm and the diameter of the circle that the feathers make is around 54mm. The cork is normally covered with thin leather or synthetic material. The shape makes it exceptionally aerodynamically stable and will turn to fly cork first and remain in the cork-first orientation regardless of initial orientation.
There are two types of shuttlecocks: Synthetic shuttles & Feathered shuttles. Synthetic shuttles are often used by recreational players to reduce their costs as feathered shuttles is quite expensive especially outside Asia and can break easily. These synthetic shuttles commonly be constructed with plastic skirt and either synthetic foam base or natural cork.
Experienced badminton players generally prefer to use the feathered shuttlecocks as they can control the shuttle better and also easier to “feel” it. Badminton tournaments are always played using feathered shuttlecocks. Professional Badminton Player from Indonesia - Taufik Hidayat delivers 305 km/h badminton smash using feathered shuttlecock.
